Batman Begins Movie Intro Sequence Concept

Check out this movie intro sequence concept of the hit movie, Batman Begins!

Here’s how this animation came to be!

Overview

This was a class project where we were allowed to choose any movie we wanted, and we were told to create an intro movie sequence for it (think of animation sequences you would sometimes find in movies, such as Monsters Inc.). I decided to do the movie Batman Begins, which due to the darker nature of the film, allowed me to play around with a solely black and white animation. I really wanted to convey Bruce Wayne’s story through this animation, as it’s a central part of who Batman is. Here’s some of my storyboards:

The hardest part of animating this was that I wanted the animation to sync up with the music. I managed to figure out ways around this, and I was even able to add interesting perspectives to the animation!

The final animation turned out great! It was eventually selected by one of the art professors at St. Ambrose University to be displayed at the Figge Art Museum’s College Invitational in Davenport, IA.

What I Learned

Before this project, I really only used After Effects to make short, 5-10 second animations. This was a lot larger of an animation, and since there were a handful of scenes that needed to be synced with the music, I had to make good use of marking tools that After Effects offers to help make things work smoothly.

I played around with perspective on this project. One of the scenes in the animation features a dramatic perspective, which I don’t play around with that much. In fact, before this project, I hardly used the perspective tools that Adobe tends to offer. I believe that I can utilize these tools for some new and dramatic aesthetics to a design.

I got a better idea of how animators plan their way through a certain animation through storyboards. This demonstrates a new kind of creative process for me, as I was mainly used to planning out with static images. Storyboards helped me get a clear idea of what I wanted to see happen in the animation, which made things go smoothly!
