Tokyo, Japan Travel Poster

Mixing traditional Japan style with the vibrant Bauhaus art style

Here’s how the poster was developed!

Overview

This was a classroom project where every student had to make a travel poster with a certain art style. Thus, I decided to make a travel poster for Tokyo, Japan using the Bauhaus art style. I love this art movement! The style is filled to the brim with energetic color and creative use of geometric shapes.

Since Tokyo is all about combining past with future, I figured it would be a good idea to incorporate this into the design. The font used is Turret Road, which is a very futuristic font. I also used traditional Japanese patterns in the background to represent Japan’s past. These elements combined create a very aesthetic poster!

The poster was eventually printed and displayed in the Galvin Fine Art Center’s Morissey Gallery as my senior art piece! To add on to it, I made a social media cover version of the design.

What I Learned

I learned about the Bauhaus art style. This art style tends to be colorful, vivid, and full of colorful shapes! In fact, both the Bauhaus art style and the traditional Japanese style tended to both favor simple shapes. I was able to apply this concept to the project, and it’s something I can see myself applying to more projects in the future.

This is the project that got me a lot more in-depth in the brainstorming process. Before this, I was sticking with what was “safe” and the things I’ve known. However, starting with this project, I played outside of my comfort zone a lot more, which allowed me to come up with a solution that was not typical of what I usually come up with.

I was able to get more experience making mockups using Photoshop! The mockups I made were great at helping the brand come to life, and the consumer can get a clearer idea of what the branding looks like in action. It also gave me a greater sense of where you would most likely find the branding in various situations.
